Apollo Goalie Nick Althaus Named Finalist For Brimsek Award

St. Cloud Apollo senior goalie Nick Althaus has been named one of two finalists for the Frank Brimsek Award, given annually to the best high school hockey goalie in Minnesota.

Althaus, who has played for the Eagles since he was in eighth grade, is 21-2 this season (his 21 wins lead the state) with a 1.42 goals-against average (fourth in state) and a .932 save percentage (sixth). In his five year career, Althaus has recorded a state record 24 shutouts, including eight this season.

"Nick is our backbone," Apollo coach Pete Matanich said Friday. "We lean on him for everything, he keeps us in every game."

"It's going to be tough to lose him next season," Matanich said.

Duluth Denfeld goalie River Alander ( 7-8-1 record with a 2.52 goals-allowed average and a .916 save percentage) is the other finalist for the award, which will be presented on March 6th in St. Paul.
