Preakness Stakes Preview Brings Back Derby Contenders
The 152nd Run for the Roses, The Kentucky Derby 2026, is in the books.
Golden Tempo, a horse that started the race in dead last place, raced ahead to beat the favorite Renegade in the last seconds of the race for a spectacular finish, and a purse of 3.1 million dollars for the house of Golden Tempo.
Now, we move on to race number two in the Triple Crown series. The 151st running of The Preakness will be held this coming Saturday, at 5:50 pm at Laurel Park in Maryland, just two Saturdays after The Kentucky Derby.
THERE WILL BE NO TRIPLE CROWN WINNER THIS YEAR
Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo will NOT be running in The Preakness, which means there can be no Triple Crown winner this year. However, many of the horse that you saw in the Kentucky Derby, and some that you were expecting to see in the Kentucky Derby but didn't run, WILL be running in The Preakness.

WHAT DERBY HORSES WILL BE RUNNING IN 'THE PREAKNESS?
The Kentucky Derby this year was full of drama right up to the actual run for the roses. Days leading up to the event, several horses that were scheduled to run were scratched. What Kentucky Derby horses that ran or were scheduled to run will participate in The Preakness this Saturday, May 16th?
SILENT TACTIC - PROBABLY
Silent Tactic was scratched from the Kentucky Derby because of a bruised left front foot. Since that time, he has been training with a full pad on his foot, and is expected to run in The Preakness, but they were going to make the call sometime today, Monday, May 11th, to see if he's fit to run.
Silent Tactic has won one of his four starts this year. If he runs, Irad Ortiz Jr. has been selected to ride him. Irad rode Renegade to finish in 2nd place to his brother, Jose Ortiz, atop Golden Tempo, making an exciting 1st/2nd finish by the Ortiz brothers.

GREAT WHITE - PROBABLY
When Silent Tactic was scratched from the line-up for the Kentucky Derby, Great White was in! Great White, a massive 1300-pound horse, unfortunately, was out as fast as he was in. While the horses were all loading into the starting gates, they believed another horse backed into him, spooking him and causing him to rear up, throwing his jockey, and landing on his side.
Fortunately, neither the jockey nor the horse was hurt in the incident. Great White's trainer said what happened at the Derby gate was no one's fault. It was just Great White feeling 'full of himself.'
So will he run in The Preakness? Trainer John Ennis says if Great White has high energy levels, it will be a green light. Great White has had four starts. He's won twice on Turf and only run on a dirt track once, leading up to the Derby.
OCELLI - MAYBE
Ocelli was also not initially chosen to run in the Kentucky Derby, but when Fulleffort was scratched due to a chip in his left hind ankle, Ocelli was in, and ended up finishing in 3rd place with odds of 70-1. That's incredible. If Ocelli runs and wins The Preakness, he will be the first maiden to win a race since Refund did it back in 1888.
But...That's the question. Will Ocelli run? It's a lot to ask, just two weeks since the Derby Run.
THE PUMA - NOT RUNNING
The Puma, who was my pick for the Kentucky Derby, was scratched the morning of the Derby due to swelling in his leg from a skin infection. So will he run in The Preakness?
Right now, they are saying he will probably skip The Preakness and hope he will be ready for The Belmont in a few weeks.
The Preakness draw is scheduled for tonight, Monday, May 11th, between 4 and 6 pm at Laurel Park.
