Q: Was this movie filmed in Minnesota?
We filmed 95% of this film in Rush City, Minnesota. So it's a Minnesota-made film that captures the feel of the state because there's a lot of damn mosquitoes in it. Lol, just kidding, we loved the feeling of shooting this in Minnesota; there's a genuine authenticity to the survival bushcraft levels of this film. Even more authentically, we brought in two contestants who competed in Season 2 and Season 5 of "Alone" on the History Channel. Larry Roberts and Nicole Apelian. They not only appeared in the film but made sure everything in this film was as authentic as possible.
Q: Did you write this?
I co-wrote Solitude with my talented writing partners, T.C. Dewitt and Steven Morgan McKay. We wanted to create a compelling narrative that explores the deeper psychological themes of competing in a "bushcraft"-type competition.
Q: Do you write and direct only Horror?
While Horror is my primary focus because of my passion for the genre, I also enjoy exploring other styles. The principles of storytelling transcend genres, and I'm always open to new creative challenges, but yes, I love Horror the most. It captivated me in my youth and still finds a way to keep me up at night.
Q: Have you always been a horror fan?
Absolutely! My love for horror films began at a young age. Movies like Night of the Living Dead, Return of the Living Dead, Halloween, The Shining, The Thing, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th captivated me and ignited my passion for storytelling in this genre. I love how Horror can evoke intense emotions and provoke thought. Plus, it lets you unplug from reality. We could all use a bit of that these days. Movie suggestion: Want a scary experience? Watch "The Descent" alone, in the dark. I'm a hardened horror fan, and this one even had me looking away a few times!
Q: How long have you been doing this?
I've been making films with my wife and kids for about 14 years, starting with short films and gradually moving to features. The journey has been incredibly rewarding but a challenge. Each project, including Solitude, has taught me something new. Sometimes, something I wish I didn't know. It's been a hell of a ride, though. No matter how bad a film turns out or if it isn't what I hoped for, my friend Dalton always reminds me that the worst day on a film set is still better than the best day on a lousy job.
Q: What brought you to St. Cloud?
Funny story: At the time, my family and I were living in Watertown, SD. For our anniversary, we drove up to Duluth for a fun weekend. I passed through St. Cloud and thought it was a nice place. Watertown needed to be bigger for us, and St. Cloud seemed the right size. So we looked into some real estate, and my wife found a house she absolutely loved, and we packed up and moved. We haven't looked back-- we love living here.
Q: Anything else that you would love for everyone to know?
Solitude will be shown at the Twin Cities Film Festival this Tuesday at 7:45 PM. Any ticket buyer will get a free DVD or Blu-ray of the film. We want to fill up the theatre, get some Minnesotans in there, and hear what they think.
