A Facebook Scam That Minnesotans Should Be Aware Of

We’ve got so much to pay attention to that often times we aren’t as thorough with some things as we should be. And that’s what scammers are counting on. 

Late last week, while I was scrolling through Facebook, I noticed a t-shirt from my high school in North Carolina that had my graduation year on it. I wasn’t surprised, we have some very active alum who coordinate communications to our class members and arrange any reunions or get-togethers the Class of 89 has. 

I thought the shirt was kind of cool looking, so i clicked on the link to find out how much it was. I was surprised the T-shirt wasn’t the only thing they were selling. Several other items including a “Stanley” type bottle with the school logo and our class year on it. 

The text really encouraging us to buy the shirt or the bottle, because all the funds were going to the next reunion. That didn’t seem right to me. So, I looked at the lady who posted the information, and I thought “I don’t recognize her”. 

There were 543 members of my graduating class and I’ve been out of school for 35 years, so it’s possible I just don’t recognize this lady, or I’ve forgotten her. But something told me, wait. I know the folks who are over our class events, and when or if I saw them share this information, I’d buy something. 

As I kept scrolling, a few minutes later, I saw the same T-shirt. But this time it was a different person posting it. This surely was one of my classmates authenticating this deal? 

Nope! Again, someone else I didn’t recognize. Finally, one of the organizers shared a post to not click on anything featuring the t-shirt and bottle. Our class wasn’t doing anything like that right now. 

Since then, I’ve noticed at least three other people spinning the same post. As one of our chief organizers said, these scammers must really like us.  

I told you all this, to make you aware, if you see something from your school, make sure the post is from someone you know. Apparently, these types of deals must be profitable for them to keep plugging away at it.
