It’s Time to Say “Thank You” to Minnesota Teachers

Four months as quickly passed by and now it’s May. It’s hard to believe that time has passed this fast. We’re finally getting into the warmer weather months, and pretty soon the end of school will be here. 

Students will be extremely happy, but so will the teachers.  They look forward to summer break as well. But before we get to that point, there’s still classes that have to be taught.  

Next week while the teachers are working on getting through the home stretch of classwork, they’ll be doing so during Teacher Appreciation Week, which is May 6th-10th.  

There’s some data out there that says that a teacher can impact over three thousand students during their career. Over half of the people who responded to this study said that a teacher helped them through a difficult time.  

I remember when I was a sophomore in high school, I was struggling badly in math in the first nine weeks of school. I had a math teacher who was new to the school, and I met with him after class one day about my situation.  

He used his lunch period to meet with me. His first question was “what are you interested in?”. I told him I loved football, and he taught me to do math by sevens, which of course is a touchdown and an extra point.  

During my 25 plus years of broadcasting sports, I took his method and was able to do math in my head on the fly while broadcasting. I could never repay him for his approach and the fact he cared enough to bring it to my level and how that has impacted my life. 

Another stat about teachers, over 80% of people said that a teacher encouraged them to chase their dreams, and then gave them the confidence to do so. 

I credit the start of my radio career to my guidance counselor my senior year. She asked me what I wanted to do after graduation, and early in my last year of high school, I had no real idea. She asked what I thought I was good at, I smartly remarked “sitting on my butt, and running my mouth”.  

Three days later she approached me about an opening at the local radio station, which was my first job in radio almost 36 years ago. She then went on to help me find a community college not far from home which helped me to be prepared for this journey I’ve been on during my career.

There’s more going on in our classrooms than just teaching a particular subject, teachers are helping students each year navigate the pains of growing into who they’re going to be.  

So, if you know or come in contact with a teacher, make sure you show them some appreciation for what they do. Odds are, at least one teacher had a positive impact on you.  

And if you can do something good for a teacher next week, do it. Lord knows most of them are doing more than they’ll ever get paid for.
