Cathedral football is heading into 2026 with a new offensive coordinator, a quarterback battle still unsettled, and something to prove after last season's section final loss.

The Cathedral football team is feeling the buzz as they prepare for a new season, building on that momentum from last year’s playoff run.

The Cathedral football team is facing many changes to the roster and schedule in 2023. Cathedral Head Coach Andrew Leintz says the majority of their running backs, receivers and quarterback were seniors last season while the offensive and defensive lineman largely return.

The high school football playoffs begin tonight for many of the Central Minnesota teams. Tonight's games are first round section playoff games with the 2nd round or section semifinals happening Saturday. AM 1390/93.9 FM Granite City Sports will broadcast the Cathedral at Milaca game.

It's not to often a freshman gets to start on the varsity football team, but this week's All-Star Student has been playing on the defensive line for three years, and is only a Junior at Cathedral High School.

The High School Football section quarterfinals will be played tonight throughout the area. AM 1390-the Fan will broadcast the section 85A quarterfinal game between Sauk Rapids-Rice and St. Cloud Apollo. The Eagles have won 3 straight games and are 3-5 while Sauk Rapids-Rice is 1-7. Apollo beat Sauk Rapids-Rice earlier this season 9-6 to at the time snap their 22-game school losing streak. The Eagles have since beat Tech and Fergus Falls.

The high school football pairing in section 85A and section 53A have been released. In section 85A Moorhead is the #1 seed, Sartell-St. Stephen is the #2 seed, Apollo is seeded #3, Tech is #4, Alexandria is #5 and Sauk Rapids-Rice is seeded #6. The top two seeds get a first round bye with #6 Sauk Rapids-Rice playing at #3 Apollo at 7pm Tuesday night. #5 Alexandria will play at #4 Tech at 8:15pm at SCSU Tuesday night.

The Cathedral football team has improved each of the first 3 seasons under head coach Dean Taylor the bar is set even higher for this season. Cathedral won just 1 game in Taylor's first year there but 3 games the following year and 6 games in 2011. Cathedral lost some key players from last year's team but Taylor has high hopes for this year's team.

Brainerd 28, Tech 13 (Brainerd recovered a bad snap on a punt in the end zone in the 2nd half to help secure the win. Jacob Peterson ran for 114 yards and a touchdown. Peterson also had a 89-yard kickoff return touchdown. The Tigers are 4-1. Brainerd improves to 3-2). Cathedral 21, Mora 0 (Cathedral improves to 5-0. Waylon Bemboom ran for 90 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Crusaders and Isaak Blitvich had a 75 yard interception return touchdown for Cathedral).
