They said it couldn’t be done, but American beer makers said, “Hold my beer".

Samuel Adams has set a record with their 2025 vintage of “Utopias”; the annual limited edition brew weighs in with a 30% alcohol by volume (ABV), one of the heaviest beers ever brewed. It’s so strong, it can’t be sold as beer in 13 states.

This year’s Utopias is now available at select stores. The ceramic bottle is meant to be resealable, and the uncarbonated beer should be enjoyed like a fine sipping spirit that gets better with time. The brew itself is 30 years old, blended from brews aged in a variety of different woods. Beer experts say “The resulting liquid is dark, rich, and spirit-like — caramel, dried fruit, oak, smoke, subtle citrus”. It’s an American project: brewed in Cincinnati, aged in Pennsylvania, and bottled in Boston. Every bottle is numbered - #1 belongs to the master brewer.

It’s meant to be sipped slowly at room temperature. At $240 per bottle, maybe it should be sipped VERY slowly.

It’s now available for sale in 35 states, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas, but the ABV is so high that it can’t be sold as a beer in the other 15 states.
