The Minnesota Twins avoided a weekend sweep in Kansas City with an 8-3 win over the Royals Sunday afternoon. The Twins are 9-9 on the season and 1.5 games out of first place.

Trevor Plouffe led the charge for the Twins by going 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, and Brian Dozier had three hits to help Minnesota to the win.

Phil Hughes earned the win for the Twins by pitching six innings while allowing three runs on nine hits. The right-hander allowed just one walk with three strikeouts.

The Twins begin a series in Tampa Bay on Tuesday night. David Price will pitch for the Rays opposite Minnesota’s Kyle Gibson.
