The University of North Dakota's Board of Higher Education decided Monday to retire the Fighting Sioux nickname by the year's end.

This move anticipates lawmakers will soon repeal a law requiring the school to keep the nickname.

The board voted unanimously to restart the process of dumping the nickname and a logo depicting the American Indian warrior, symbols the NCAA contends are offensive.
