Huskies Clinch First Ever WCHA Title In Madison Friday

SCSU Athletics

The St. Cloud State Huskies secured at least a share of the WCHA title with a comeback win over the Badgers Friday.

The St. Cloud State Huskies will be at worst co-champions of the WCHA after defeating the Wisconsin Badgers 4-2. The Huskies trailed 2-1 until a three goal third period.

Johnny Brodzinski’s second goal of the game just over a minute into the third period tied the game at two. The game winning goal was scored by Rogers native Nick Jensen on a shot that trickled through the five-hole of Wisconsin goaltender Joel Rumpel. Drew LeBlanc would add an empty net goal for the 4-2 advantage.

Huskies goalie Ryan Faragher made 26 saves to earn the win, and Andrew Prochno was a +3 with two assists.

The Huskies have clinched home ice in the first round of the WCHA playoffs and have clinched their first ever McNaughton Cup in the final season of the current WCHA. After this season many teams will defect to newly created conferences, with Minnesota and Wisconsin going to the Big Ten and SCSU, Denver, North Dakota, Nebraska-Omaha, Colorado College and Minnesota-Duluth going to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
