Cathedral graduate Nate Schmidt made his NHL debut Saturday night with the Washington Capitals at the Verizon Center in a game against Colorado. Schmidt played just under 15 minutes and was a minus-one.

He got into a second game Monday night and played 19:13 with a 0 plus/minus rating.

Schmidt is just the second Crusader to make an appearance on the roster of a team affiliated with the “four major sports.” Tom Burgmeier (’61) played in Major League Baseball for 17 seasons, including four with the Minnesota Twins.

Schmidt joined the Granite City Cafe Tuesday to talk about life as a pro.
