The Apollo Eagle baseball team will head to Cold Spring Thursday to take on the Rocori Spartans. The Eagles will be playing their first game of the 2017 season, while Rocori is looking to shake off a season-opening 4-2 loss to Tech on Tuesday.
Ethan Hopper had a pair of hits in the win for Tech. The Spartans had the tying runs in scoring position with two outs in the top of the second inning, but Austin Nikolas struck out Dylan Tebrake to end the game.
Trevor Koening threw four strong innings before yielding to Austin Nikolas for the final frame. The Tigers scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, including a three-run home run from Ethan Hopper, to invoke the mercy rule.
Beginning this season, pitchers will only be allowed to throw a maximum of 105 pitches in a given day at the varsity level and 85 pitches at lower levels. Those who throw the maximum number of pitches will be required to rest for a minimum of three days.
The Tech Tiger baseball team will open their 2017 season Thursday night against Monticello at Joe Faber Field. The Tigers finished 2016 with an 18-6 record, including a 16-4 mark in the regular season.
